Cosmetic products are products prepared for application to the mouth, nails, hair, and human skin. The primary purpose of cosmetics is to clean, provide fragrance, improve appearance, prevent unpleasant odors, protect, and enhance. Cosmetic products that are prepared, manufactured, produced, and packaged in accordance with Islamic rules and criteria are called halal cosmetic products. Care products such as skin care, hair care, fragrant herbal oils, and nail products, which are produced as halal cosmetic products, are also produced on a contract basis, increasing their availability.

Contract-manufactured halal cosmetic products are particularly important for people who observe Islamic values. The reason for this is that when cosmetic products are used on the body, they are absorbed by the body and penetrate the skin. As a result of this absorption process, every component, every additive, and hundreds of unknown animal-derived additives in cosmetic products penetrate the skin. The additives in cosmetics are classified as animal-based, synthetic, or plant-based. The components used in halal cosmetic products have been proven to comply with Islamic standards.

How to Identify Halal Cosmetic Products?

Custom-made halal cosmetic products undergo compliance assessment stages during and after production. These stages include sampling, testing, inspection, certification, management system evaluation and registration, product and production adequacy, accreditation, and recognition of accreditation program capability. After contract manufacturing of halal cosmetics, when the product receives a perfect score in the evaluations and is found to comply with standards and regulations, it is eligible for halal cosmetics certification.

Halal cosmetic certifications conducted during contract manufacturing of halal cosmetics are carried out in collaboration with the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE) and the Presidency of Religious Affairs. All cosmetic products that obtain halal certification are considered “safe” in the eyes of consumers. For this reason, companies engaged in contract manufacturing of halal cosmetics produce their products in a halal environment, using halal ingredients, and in accordance with GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) conditions, ensuring that there is no contact with non-halal substances. Therefore, to understand halal-certified products, it is sufficient to check the packaging and the ingredients section of the product. The presence of a halal-certified product label and TSE stamp on cosmetic products also indicates that they are produced through halal cosmetic manufacturing.

What is in the contents of products produced with contract halal cosmetics production?

Halal cosmetic products are products produced in full compliance with Islamic conditions. In order to be considered halal, halal cosmetic products must contain only components permitted by national cosmetic regulations. Therefore, contract halal cosmetic products do not contain:

No components derived from humans or human-produced components, no components derived from non-halal animals or their by-products, and no substances considered impure. Additionally, such products cannot be prepared, processed, produced, stored, or transported using equipment contaminated with impure substances.
No genetic material from non-halal animals (such as pigs) can be present.
Genetic material from other animals proven to be harmful to human health scientifically cannot be present.
Nanomaterials that have not been proven to be harmless to human health through international testing methods cannot be present.
Even if they are halal, substances obtained from animals whose species are at risk of extinction through methods that threaten their survival cannot be present.

What Should Be Considered During Contract Halal Cosmetics Production?

During contract halal cosmetics production, the suitability of the production site for halal production is as important as the components used. Therefore, certain aspects require extra attention during contract halal cosmetics production. The aspects to consider during halal cosmetics production are as follows:

When producing custom-made halal cosmetics, the areas where production takes place must not have previously been used for the production of non-halal products.
Locations where halal cosmetics are produced must be physically separated from locations where non-halal products are produced.
When applying GMP standards in production areas, care must be taken to ensure that they do not conflict with Islamic rules.
The equipment, tools, machines, and process aids used in the facility where contract manufacturing of halal cosmetics is carried out must not be made of or contain any impure substances.
The equipment in the facility must only be used for the production of halal cosmetics.
